Abrasive Wheel Training

The risk of breakage is inherent in every abrasive wheel. Our specialist abrasive wheel training is designed to give operatives the skills and knowledge they need to carry out their work safely, effectively, and in compliance with the law.

Employers and employees alike have a responsibility for health and safety in the workplace. As there are a number of risks and hazards associated with the use of abrasive wheels, proper training is therefore essential.

What is Abrasive Wheel Training?

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.

Abrasive wheel training covers the safe use of a range of tools, including:

  • Angle grinders,

  • Cut off saws,

  • Floor saws,

  • Chop saws,

  • Bench grinders,

  • Pedestal grinders,

  • Precision grinders,

  • Any other tool using an abrasive wheel or disk.

Each of these tools has the potential to cause life changing, or even life ending injuries. Abrasive wheel training seeks to minimise and eliminate risks and hazards, wherever possible, ensuring safety in the workplace.

Our training is popular with a variety of professionals, in industries including:

  • Transportation,

  • Manufacturing,

  • Agriculture,

  • Emergency services,

  • Building,

  • Engineering,

  • And more.

Why is Abrasive Wheel Training Necessary?

In addition to general health and safety legislation, there are numerous laws and regulations which set up how specific tools and pieces of equipment are to be used in the workplace.

With regards to abrasive wheels, PUWER 98 (The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998) requires, among other things, that all machinery is suitable for its intended use and is properly maintained.

All employees, including those using, mounting and managing the operation of abrasive wheels, should be fully informed and properly trained in their safe use.

There are a number of very serious risks and hazards involved in using an abrasive wheel. These include:

  • Cuts,

  • Burns,

  • Loss of limbs or digits,

  • Exposure to toxic materials,

  • Eye damage,

  • Hearing damage,

  • Strains and sprains

  • Strike injuries.

Anyone using an abrasive wheel, or anyone in their vicinity is at risk of these injuries. Additionally, there is the risk of damage to other property, equipment and tools. Proper abrasive wheel training minimises these risks, improving both safety and productivity.

This is essential for health and safety in the workplace.

Our abrasive wheel training courses are tailored to the needs of each company, with regards to the specific tools they use. All training sessions cover build skills and knowledge across the following four categories:

1. Understanding Abrasive Wheel Regulations

Our course begins by building awareness of the different regulations which govern abrasive wheel use. This includes developing a working awareness of PUWER 98, along with the specific clauses which cover different types of abrasive wheel tools.

We’ll also outline the responsibilities of operatives, companies and other internal team members with regards to ensuring compliance with these regulations. Trainees will develop the skills to direct colleagues who do not use abrasive wheels on the appropriate behaviour during their operation.

2. Wheel Mounting and Storage

In any workplace setting, one of the most important health and safety decisions which can be taken is using the appropriate tool for the job. This section of the training will cover how to identify the right wheels for the job.

Our abrasive wheel training also covers the practical steps needed to safely mount and replace wheels, as well as how and where abrasive wheels should be stored in order to eliminate common risks and hazards.

By the end of the course, trainees will be able to identify common risks associated with abrasive wheel usage, as well as the best practices for mitigating these.

4. Protective Measures and Hazard Awareness

Finally, we’ll cover the specific measures and procedures which should be put in place to ensure safe usage of abrasive wheels in the workplace. Trainees will also gain the ability to preempt and avoid unnecessary risks, and communicate this information to colleagues.
